Spousal Support Attorneys In Covington

Last updated on June 16, 2025

Alimony is a bit of a loaded term for all divorce proceedings. Both sides of a divorce have a vested interest in “winning” at this piece. However, a long, protracted battle will only serve to make a messy, high-conflict, costly divorce.

At FH Law, we are a pair of family law attorneys that have seen all sides of alimony and spousal support issues facing our clients in Covington and all over Kenton County. Whether you are paying support, called maintenance in Kentucky law, or receiving it, we can help you achieve your goals, and we’ll do so with compassionate, personalized service that accounts for your unique needs.

Kentucky Has Multiple Types Of Spousal Support

Spousal support is about helping the lower-earning spouse maintain a relatively similar lifestyle to their married life. However, that goal is not all-encompassing or all-overriding. In fact, Kentucky’s law provides for multiple types of alimony:

  • Temporary alimony: This is meant to be a stop gap during divorce and separation to help the spouse with the lower income maintain their standard of living while the divorce is finalized.
  • Rehabilitative alimony: This is a type of alimony that is meant to support a spouse while they train and seek work to become self-sufficient. It often has several usage provisions and is subject to regular review.
  • Permanent alimony: This is awarded based on the age, health and several other factors. If a spouse is unlikely to become self-sufficient, permanent alimony may be ordered.

Aside from the styles of alimony, you can also get a “lump-sum” alimony that is a one time payment, rather than continual payments. Many who pay alimony prefer this method as it “gets it over with” on the front end so alimony isn’t a constant worry for the future.

Modifications To Spousal Support

Like any ongoing divorce decree, spousal support is not meant to stay static from the beginning to the end of your life. In fact, changes in employment, living situation and even romantic life can and do necessitate updates and changes. If you have an alimony order that isn’t working anymore, no matter which side you’re on, we can help you pursue the changes you need.

We Treat You Like A Person

People who pay child support often feel like nothing more than a bank account. People who receive support can feel like a burden. You’re none of those things. You’re a person with a life and you deserve respect. We’ll give it to you, and pursue the spousal support outcomes you deserve. Call us at 859-440-2338 or send an email using this form.
